What Happens During a Moroccan Bath?

A Moroccan bath is a steam-based cleansing ritual that combines warmth, traditional black soap and physical exfoliation. The aim is smoother skin and a deep sense of renewal, not simply a quick shower or body scrub.

The traditional hammam sequence

Your session begins in a warm, private room. Steam softens the outer layer of skin and prepares it for cleansing. Traditional black soap is then applied and left briefly so it can loosen surface buildup.

  • Warm steam prepares the skin
  • Black soap softens dead skin
  • A kessa glove provides controlled exfoliation
  • Rinsing removes loosened skin and soap
  • Moisturising oil helps finish the ritual

What does the exfoliation feel like?

The kessa glove creates noticeable friction and you may see rolls of dead skin lift away. This is normal. The pressure should feel thorough without causing pain, and it can be reduced for sensitive areas.

Freshly exfoliated skin can feel exceptionally smooth. Slight temporary pinkness may occur, particularly if your skin is fair or reactive.

How to prepare for a Moroccan bath

Avoid shaving, waxing, strong acids or retinoid body products immediately before your appointment. Tell the therapist about eczema, sunburn, broken skin or other sensitivities so the treatment can be adapted.

Bring no special equipment. Towels and the treatment essentials are provided, and the experience takes place in a private suite.

How often should you book?

For most people, every two to four weeks is enough to maintain smooth skin without over-exfoliating. Your ideal schedule depends on skin sensitivity and the products used in your regular routine.
